Strain hardening by sediment transport

چکیده

The critical fluid-shear stress for the onset of sediment transport, θc, varies with history applied shear. This effect has been primarily attributed to compaction; role shear jamming is less explored. We examine response a granular bed cycles varying magnitude and direction, determine isotropic anisotropic contributions. Creep bed-load transport result in direction-dependent strain hardening θ/θc<4. Dilation-induced weakening, memory loss, occur larger stresses that fluidize bed. Our findings provide explanation formation breakup hard-packed riverbed “armor.”Received 29 October 2021Accepted 23 March 2022DOI:https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevResearch.4.L022055Published by American Physical Society under terms Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International license. Shredding of Environmental Signals by Sediment Transport

Landscapes respond to climate, tectonic motions and sea level, but this response is mediated by sediment transport. Understanding transmission of environmental signals is crucial for predicting landscape response to climate change, and interpreting paleo-climate and tectonics from stratigraphy. Here we propose that sediment transport can act as a nonlinear filter that completely destroys (“shre...

Sediment Transport in Unsteady Flow Conditions

Sediment transport under unsteady flow condition is studied experimentally. In the first step, sediment transport under different steady flow conditions was measured and an empirical equation was derived for its calculation. In the next step, two continuous and three stepwise hydrographs were generated in the flume, and their sediment transport rate was measured. The continuous hydrographs were...

Strain Hardening of Fractal Colloidal Gels

We report on experiments on the rheology of gels formed by diffusion-limited aggregation of neutrally buoyant colloidal particles. These gels form very weak solids, with the elastic modulus, G0svd, larger than the loss modulus, G00svd, and with both G0svd and G00svd exhibiting only a very weak frequency dependence. Upon small but finite strains g , 0.45 the elastic modulus increases roughly exp...

Cyclic strain hardening of nanocrystalline nickel

We demonstrate cyclic strain hardening and frequency-dependent fatigue life in electrodeposited nanocrystalline Ni subjected to tension–tension cyclic deformation. These observations are rationalized through mechanistic arguments based on the exhaustion of dislocation sources in the early stages of cyclic loading and on the domination of diffusive processes during later stages. 2005 Acta Materi...

Strong strain hardening in nanocrystalline nickel.

Low strain hardening has hitherto been considered an intrinsic behavior for most nanocrystalline (NC) metals, due to their perceived inability to accumulate dislocations. In this Letter, we show strong strain hardening in NC nickel with a grain size of approximately 20 nm under large plastic strains. Contrary to common belief, we have observed significant dislocation accumulation in the grain i...
